On Nov. 4, Johnstown America Corp. announced it's delivering 1,250 BethGon® II aluminum coal gondolas — representing the car builder's largest order this year — to American Electric Power (AEP).
The utility plans to use 875 gondolas in Powder River Basin service provided by Burlington Northern Santa Fe; the remaining 375 gondolas would replace older cars in the utility's fleet.
"This equipment is necessary [for us] to have a modern, efficient fleet to carry fuel to our power plants and effectively provide power for our customers," said AEP Director of Transportation and Marketing Tim Stanley in a prepared statement.
The 53-foot, 286,000-pound gross load BethGon IIs are an updated version of the BethGon, which Johnstown America introduced in 1985.
