• The Whitmore Manufacturing Co. has acquired QHi Rail Ltd., a United Kingdom-based manufacturer of gauge face and top-of-rail (TOR) lubrication systems for railways. Founded in 1997, QHi has grown rapidly and become a leading provider of rail lubricators in both freight and transit systems throughout Europe, according to a Whitmore press release. QHi has systems operating in 20 countries. “The synergy created by working together will enable us to take railway lubrication solutions to the next level,” said Jack Ellis, vice president of sales for Whitmore.
• GATX Corp. reported first-quarter net income of $30.3 million, or 64 cents per diluted share, compared with $19.9 million, or 42 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Rail segment profit was $58.6 million versus $51.6 million a year ago. The segment’s profit was driven by increased lease rates and lower maintenance expenses due to a high-renewal success rate in North America, GATX officials said in a prepared statement. As of March 31, GATX Rail’s North American fleet totaled 109,000 rail cars, and the fleet utilization rate was 98.5 percent compared with 98.2 percent at 2011’s end and 97.8 percent on March 31, 2011.
• Parsons Brinckerhoff has named Owen MacDonald a transportation engineer. He will serve as transportation coordinator for a light-rail transit project in Toronto. MacDonald has more than 40 years of traffic engineering experience. From 1987 to 2011, he served as a senior supervising engineer at the firm. Prior to rejoining the firm, he served as traffic and parking director for Somerville, Mass.
• Steve McCullough has joined AllTranstek as director of welding and special processes. He previously served in the post before developing skills at other companies, AllTranstek officials said in a prepared statement. Most recently, McCullough served as principal quality engineer at Zimmer Inc. He also has experience at Union Tank Car Co.
