Alstom and the Central Saxony transport authority, Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS), presented yesterday in Germany a new battery-powered train developed by Alstom. Eleven Coradia Continental battery-electric trains have been ordered by VMS. These trains will enter service in 2024 on the Chemnitz-Leipzig line, according to an Alstom press release.

The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) has hired Ashley Shelton as senior director of government and public affairs, effective Sept. 12. Shelton has served in U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford’s (R-Ark.) office since April 2013. During this time, she managed staff and worked with members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on issues related to Crawford’s role as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials. In her new post, she will work with RSI’s Government and Public Affairs Committee, as well as RSI members, technical staff, strategic partners and lawmakers to advance RSI’s legislative interests.

The League of Railway Women today announced the winners of its two annual scholarships. Jacqueline Mathieson, national account manager at CN who is pursuing an executive MBA, received the $3,000 Connie Sumara Memorial Scholarship. And Catherine Holt received the LRW’s $2,000 Future of Railroading Scholarship. She is completing a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at Florida Polytechnic University.
