Alstom signed an agreement to upgrade Metro de Madrid’s Line 6 signaling, making it Madrid's first driverless metro line. The 14.6-mile circular line has 28 stations and is one of the busiest lines in the city, according to an Alstom press release. The contract includes design, engineering, installation and commissioning of the signaling system and electronic interlocks. The contract's value was not disclosed in the press release. Alstom will upgrade the current communications-based train control system from Grade of Automation 2 semi-automatic operation to Grade of Automation 4, enabling driverless operation. The project also calls for implementing a new automatic train supervision system.

SLS Group, a firm specializing in business and railroad law, has opened a Florida office to be led by Shannon Scott. Her experience spans over 20 years of labor strategy, human resources policy development, contract negotiation and compliance in multiple roles, notably at CSX. The new office marks the firm's expansion into the southeast United States.

NSH USA Corp. on Jan. 17 marked two years without a lost time accident. The current safety record, 737 days as of the 17th, is a significant growth from the previous record of 461 days. “It’s not rocket science — getting every employee home at the end of the day safe and in one piece is our top priority,” said Joe Cronin, director, manufacturing operations. NSH USA manufactures machine tools and automation systems for the rail industry and other sectors.
