For the second quarter ended June 30, American Railcar Industries Inc. reported "strong earnings from operations and record operating margins, driven by a favorable sales mix of more tank rail cars," said ARI President and Chief Executive Officer James Cowan in a prepared statement. ARI posted consolidated revenues of $159.4 million, up 3 percent compared with the $154.2 million generated for the same 2012 period. Total manufacturing segment revenues were $177.3 million, a decrease of 19 percent compared with the $219.3 million generated during the same period last year. The primary reason for the decrease? Lower hopper-car shipments, which were "partially offset by an increase in tank rail car shipments and improved general market conditions for tank rail cars," ARI officials said. During the quarter, ARI received orders for 1,850 rail cars, resulting in a backlog of 6,940 cars.

Herzog Technologies Inc. recently announced two new hires: David Lucas has joined the firm as director of field operations, and Dan Weatherby has been named director of engineering.

Cynthia Bergmann was named president of the Association of Transportation Law Professionals for 2013-14 at the organization's 84th annual meeting in Atlantic Beach, Fla. Bergmann is a partner, leader of the transportation and co-leader of the corporate practice group at law firm Freeborn & Peters L.L.P. Before joining Freeborn & Peters, Bergmann was U.S. corporate counsel for CN.

Harry Scott, past president and owner of Thompson Industries Inc. and a member of the Railway Tie Association, died July 21. He was 64. Scott was the 2012 recipient of RTA's Broad Axe Award, which recognizes an individual's contribution to the crosstie industry. Scott is survived by his wife, Cecilia, one son, one daughter, one stepdaughter, three grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.
