Ballard Power Systems Inc. has received an order from Siemens Mobility to power a fleet of seven Mireo Plus H passenger trains. Delivery of 14 200-kilowatt fuel cell modules is expected to begin in 2023, with the fleet fully in service in the Berlin-Brandenburg region by late 2024. Siemens also signed a letter of intent with Ballard for the supply of 200 fuel cell modules, totaling 40 megawatts, over the next six years, including a firm commitment on half of the fuel cell modules. Those will also be used to power Mireo Plus H trains.
Frauscher Sensor Technology has been awarded a contract for the development, deployment and maintenance of a new generation of axle counters by SNCF Reseau, which operates France's national rail network. The contract calls for the first development, supply and maintenance of the new axle-counter systems starting in fall for 10 years, renewable for another five years. The contracted maintenance period is up to 30 years.
Progress Rail signed a memorandum of understanding with Etihad Rail, operator of the United Arab Emirates' national rail network. The MOU calls for the discussion of potential opportunities for the deployment and development of an autonomous, zero-emissions and port-to-port concept, which could serve as the foundation for future rail operations, Progress Rail officials said in a press release. The MOU also calls for discussion of future collaboration on fleet decarbonization.
