Duos Technologies Inc. has been awarded a $2.3 million contract from a Class I to replace and update an earlier version of its rip® rail-car inspection portal. The Class I was not revealed. The five-year contract includes technical support, development and maintenance of a library of artificial intelligence algorithms with the objective of automating parts of the client’s rail-car inspections, Duos officials said in a press release.
The Blockchain In Transport Alliance (BiTA) elected Bob Hitt and Richard Greening to serve as chair and co-chair, respectively, of its Bill Of Lading (BOL) working group. The BOL group’s purpose is to create a modern definition of “bill of lading” and an associated data structure specification that can be leveraged across all transport modes for supply chain stakeholders, BiTA officials said in a press release. Hitt is a market manager at Salesforce and Greening is global director of technology of at The DDC Group and its freight-focused division.
Garlock released a modified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) gasket for use in sealing nonpressure tank car manway applications. TUFF-RAIL® 3504 utilizes sealing ribs to seal a wider range of bolt torques and surface conditions compared to conventional PTFE, Garlock officials said in a press release. The gasket is designed to seal under various loading conditions and can be used in a variety of acids and caustics, as well as most hydrocarbons and refrigerants.
Vacations By Rail (VBR), a provider of escorted and independent rail holidays, has been acquired by Great Rail Journeys (GRJ). The acquisition will enhance GRJ’s position as a leading escorted rail company and is a key part of its plans to expand in the United Kingdom and into new product areas, such as small group tours and connections between rail and river cruises, VBR officials said in a press release.
Argus Consulting Inc. has hired 38-year rail industry veteran Harry Syers to expand its fuels infrastructure services. As the rail market segment leader, Syers will establish a global strategy for the rail industry, strengthen relationships in the sector and supervise rail project managers, Argus officials said in a press release. Syers retired from Union Pacific Railroad after managing the company’s fuel and lubricants acquisition, transportation, storage and dispensing operations. Prior to that, he managed UP’s safety, health and environmental programs, as well as locomotive, freight car and track structure maintenance.
Alliance Shippers Inc. has received an award from Logistics Management magazine for quality service and customer satisfaction. For the 19th time, Alliance Shippers won the gold medal in the intermodal marketing category. The winners are determined by the magazine’s readers, who are buyers of logistics and transportation services, Alliance Shippers officials said in a press release.
Hanson Professional Services Inc. has hired Matthew Sutterby as a railroad designer to provide computer-aided design and document review for Class I projects. Sutterby previously was an intern at Duke Energy and Jimmy R. Lynch and Sons Inc. In those positions he supervised contractor work, assisted site engineers, conducted field observations and performed roadway stormwater drainage and erosion inspections, Hanson officials said in a press release.
