Knorr-Bremse Group has acquired a 21.3 percent share of Rail Vision Ltd. The investment is expected to allow Knorr-Bremse to expand from automated driving into the railway sector by integrating Rail Vision’s obstacle detection capabilities into automatic train operation offerings, according to a press release issued by Rail Vision affiliate Foresight. Knorr-Bremse will also appoint a director and two non-voting observers to Rail Vision’s board.

Alstom has supplied, tested and put into commercial operation its computer-based interlocking signaling system, Smartlock 400, at the main rail station in Maghagha, Egypt, according to an Alstom press release. In 2015, the company was awarded a contract by Egyptian National Railways to supply signaling equipment for the Beni Suef-Asyut Line in Egypt. Alstom is tasked with replacing the existing electromechanical interlocking solution.

Acceleware Ltd., a developer of radio frequency heating technology, will file a patent application on the use of RF XL in shipping bitumen by rail. The patent submission contemplates using the RF XL generator platform to heat cooled bitumen within rail cars at the destination terminal. This would enable undiluted bitumen to be shipped safely in rail cars and then heated with RF energy at the destination, according to an Acceleware press release.

Saft, an advanced technology battery solutions, will provide 434 onboard battery systems for 130 new trains for the Chengdu Metro as part of a multimillion-euro, two-year contact with Chinese train manufacturer CRRC. The compact, lightweight design of the MSX battery system is designed to enable CRRC to reduce weight and free up space on the new trains, according to a Saft press release. Delivery started in 2017 and is scheduled for completion by year's end.

WPS USA has hired Sabrina Drago as the transportation office lead in Sacramento, California. Drago will spearhead the firm's growth in Sacramento, including working with clients, recruiting and retaining employees and enhancing the firm’s brand, according to a WSP press release. Prior to WSP, Drago was a structural engineer in Arizona and New Mexico.

Penn Machine has appointed Stephen Hamilton national sales manager to market the company’s product lines to Canadian customers. Previously, Hamilton worked for Ontario Northland Railway as a sales and business development manager.
