Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has chosen civil engineering firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. (LAN) to oversee platform extensions at 28 light-rail stations. The $124 million project calls for modifying platforms along the Red and Blue lines to accommodate three-car trains. Currently, the Red and Blue lines are limited to two-car trains due to the stations' platform lengths. By expanding the platforms, DART will be able to roll out three-car trains systemwide, LAN officials said in a press release.

Mitsui Rail Capital LLC has hired Yiannis Loizides as director of sales and marketing. He previously held sales and marketing roles at Norfolk Southern Railway. In the new job, Loizides will focus on leasing activities for Mitsui's Western and Southeastern territory, company officials said in a press release.

Edmond Hunter has joined HNTB Corp. as senior transit and rail project manager. Based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Hunter will help HNTB's transit and rail clients plan and implement passenger services. Before joining HNTB, he served as assistant general manager for design and construction at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, where he worked on projects involving commuter rail, transit stations, bridges, tunnels and transit-oriented development.

BSM Technologies and Lat-Lon LLC have announced the BSM Technology Innovation Award, which will recognize leadership and innovation in providing Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in the rail industry. The companies will present the award at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's Connections conference in April. The rail industry's adoption of technology "translates into tangible business results, ultimately advancing the industry as a whole," said BSM President Aly Rahemtulla in a press release.

Phoenix Contact USA has introduced a lifetime limited warranty policy. Known as "Cabinet Confidence," the warranty is available only to U.S. customers who register and use Phoenix Contact power supplies and surge protection products to protect electronics, according to a company press release.

The National Railroad Construction & Maintenance Association (NRC) has announced its 2018 Education Grant Program for college, university or technical schools in North America. The association is seeking grant applications from programs that provide or are looking to provide students with a foundation to work in rail construction and maintenance contracting. The winning applicant will receive a $15,000 grant award, according to an NRC press release.
