RHT RailHaul Technologies Inc. has completed the design, manufacture and assembly of its first battery-powered demonstration rail car. The initial vehicle is based on a traditional side dump rail car. RailHaul added a battery-electric propulsion system and a remote operating and control system. The unit provides an alternative to heavy-haul diesel mine trucks to save mining companies haulage costs while also accelerating efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, company officials said in a press release.

Alstom and the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering have entered a memorandum of understanding to build new research and student engagement programs. In Pennsylvania, about 650 Alstom employees work at locations in Pittsburgh, West Mifflin and Philadelphia developing urban rail signaling solutions. The company seeks to engage the Swanson School’s research faculty and students across four collaborative pillars: student recruitment, research, student projects and “Alstom as teacher” for undergraduates.

STV Inc. hired Jacqueline Peduzzi as vice president and business unit leader in Tampa, Florida. Peduzzi will focus on the firm’s existing transportation and infrastructure relationships to grow the firm’s presence in the state. She will also lead alternative delivery activities. Peduzzi has more than 20 years of experience providing project controls, operations and management for transportation and infrastructure projects, including railways and transit facilities.

McLaren Applied won a bid to provide the 5G onboard connectivity solution for Network Rail infrastructure monitoring trains in the United Kingdom. The contract calls for the company’s patented F1-derived Fleet Connect software to be installed on its Active Antenna hardware, supported by a five-year service contract.
