The Railway Supply Institute (RSI) is praising the reintroduction of the Freight Rail Assistance and Investment to Launch Coronavirus-era Activity and Recovery Act legislation, also known as the Freight RAILCAR Act, by U.S. Reps. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) and Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) and 10 other House members. If passed, the bill would offer freight rail-car owners a time-limited 50% tax credit for purchasing new freight rail cars or refurbishing existing cars that result in improving capacity or fuel by at least 8%. In addition, the bill would provide separate tax credits for scrapping rail cars based on their depreciated value and for capital expenditures on equipment or technology enhancements that improve environmental standards or the safety, quality or efficiency of rail-car manufacturing and repair operations. "This legislation would offer incentives for new and sustained investments to help stabilize the freight rail-car manufacturing industry during this critical time," Nicole Brewin, RSI's senior vice president of government and public affairs, said in a press release.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has awarded Alstom a contract to design, manufacture, supply, test and commission 234 metro cars, including personnel training for Line 4 and the extension corridor. The order is valued at 220 million euros.
Cornelius Weitzmann will be appointed president and chief executive officer of Voith Turbo and a member of Voith Group's corporate board of management effective June 1. He will succeed Uwe Knotzer, who is leaving the company on May 31 at his own request to pursue new opportunities. Currently, Weitzmann is a member of Voith Turbo's board of management. He joined Voith in 2007.
The League of Railway Women Board (LRW) yesterday announced it would postpone its 2021 board elections until 2022. "2020 was a unique and unique and unprecedented year due to the COVID-19 pandemic," Erica Sander, LRW secretary, said in a press release. "This one-time exception is being granted to allow the board and committee members to execute current and planned initiatives such as our career center, mentoring program and educational sessions."
