The Georgia Port Authority has selected RailComm LLC to provide a yard management system for the Port of Savannah's multimodal connector. The system will allow for remote control of 83 powered rail switches and 38 powered derail devices, according to a RailComm press release. Switches can be thrown by a yardmaster or work crews from either a centralized office location or from a remote touchscreen kiosk. The yard control system will also allow crews to queue a set of routes as needed to assemble and disassemble trains on the appropriate tracks.
Koppers Inc. has named Travis Gross vice president of North American railroad products and services. Gross will oversee sales, operations, procurement and profit and loss management, according to a Koppers press release. Gross joined Koppers in 2007, and served as VP of commercial sales since 2016.
Quandel Consultants has named Peter Windschmitt director of railroad operations. Windschmitt has more than 15 years of experience in the rail industry, including in freight operations, transportation planning and passenger system integration, according to a Quandel press release. He will contribute to ongoing efforts on the Hiawatha Amtrak service between Chicago and Milwaukee.
Schneider added more than 4,200 intermodal containers in 2018, a 24 percent increase year over year. The containers, combined with chassis, allow Schneider to provide truck-like service in the intermodal segment, according to a Schneider press release. Schneider completed its conversion to a company-owned and managed chassis fleet last year. Schneider officials say the company plans to continue to invest in intermodal containers, chassis and tractors.
Knight Nicastro has opened offices in Chicago and Peoria, Illinois, and added five attorneys to its team. They are: Stephen Heine, who served as chair of his former firm’s railroad practice group; Richard Sikes, who represents transportation industry clients; Matthew Jardine, who represents corporate clients, including transportation and railroad clients, in litigation nationwide; Susannah Price, who focuses on defense of transportation companies; and Mallory Sanzeri, whose focuses on civil litigation including transportation law.
A. Stucki Co. hired Sagar Sumant as global director of the company’s SAP Global Center of Excellence, which provides training and certification for SAP software. Previously, Sumant worked for global consulting firm Stefanini, where he helped Stucki launch SAP in 2015.
