Rail supplier news from Siemens, NRC, Modjeski and Masters, and Herzog (Nov. 10)

Siemens and Bentley Systems have formalized a strategic alliance agreement to drive new business value by accelerating digitalization to advance infrastructure project delivery and asset performance in complementary business areas. The companies initially will invest at least $54 million in developing joint solutions to enlarge their respective offerings for infrastructure and industry to the benefit of the end-customers. The work will leverage new cloud services for a connected data environment to converge respective digital engineering models from both companies. In addition, about $76.24 million of secondary shares of Bentley's common stock have been acquired by Siemens under a program that will continue until Bentley's stock is public traded.

The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC) will accept nominations for its annual awards until tomorrow. In January, the association will select  the railroad construction projects of the year and the field employee of the year, and induct a new class into the NRC Hall of Fame. The railroad construction projects of the year award honors innovation, expertise and quality project management in the execution of a project by NRC member companies in 2016. Any type of rail construction project is eligible for the award, including those related to freight rail, industrial track, transit rail, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, rail on port facilities and rail on military facilities. The field employee of the year award recognizes a rail contracting worker who has demonstrated "the most dedication and excellence" in their job, according to an NRC press release. Modjeski and Masters has been selected to perform engineering services for the rehabilitation of the oldest portions of the Union Station Tunnel in St. Louis. The work will help maintain a viable alignment for the Bi-State Development's MetroLink light-rail services and provide continued access to surrounding areas. The steel frame portion of the tunnel was built in 1902 by the Terminal Railroad Association. Today, the Union Station Tunnel crosses beneath the St. Louis Union Station parking lot, five sets of excursion tracks and 20th and 21st streets.

Herzog Railroad Services Inc. has named Jim Hansen chief commercial officer. He has more than 40 years of rail industry experience and is also president of the North American Maintenance Railway Club. In addition, Hansen serves as secretary/treasurer for the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association.
