Stadler Rail announced an agreement with Swiss Federal Railways, Thurbo and RegionAlps to deliver up to 510 single-decker FLIRT trains. An initial call-off order worth 2 billion Swiss francs will fund 286 vehicles. The three-car FLIRT vehicle is 190 feet long and has a capacity of 256 passengers with seating for 134 people. The four-car option is 240 feet long and has a capacity of 370 with seating for 146. The new trains are set to be approved for rail travel in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Kawasaki Track Technologies is testing its new track fastener monitoring technology in Japan. The technology is installed on a locomotive and will capture high-resolution pictures to provide data for Kawasaki for use in machine-learning programs to inspect and repair track fasteners. The company plans to roll out similar testing in the North American freight-rail industry this summer with a pilot scheduled for early 2023, Kawasaki officials said in a press release.

Transdev North America has hired Barbara Van Riper as associate general counsel for corporate and Nassau Inter-County Express, and Tia Purnell as director of talent acquisition. Van Riper has 20 years of legal experience in  private and public practice. Most recently, she was the in-house associate attorney at Nassau Health Care Corp. in New York. Purnell has experience in talent acquisition and development and diversity and inclusion strategies. Most recently, she worked for Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago as human resources director.

Nexxiot has added Knorr-Bremse A.G. as a new client and strategic investor. Knorr-Bremse and its North American subsidiaries The New York Air Brake Corp. and Knorr Brake Co. will integrate Nexxiot's IoT hardware and software into future rail products and the systems it produces. Knorr-Bremse is also now a strategic minority investor in Nexxiot, Nexxiot officials said in a press release.

Huber+Suhner and partner Eltec Electronik A.G. have launched a compact active rail antenna designed to simplify the deployment of Wi-Fi on trains. The Huber+Suhner SENCITY® Rail Active In-Carriage Antenna provides multiple access points along the carriage ceiling, building upon previous systems that had only one fixed access point, Huber+Suhner officials said in a press release.

Rail Vision Ltd. has received a notice of allowance from the Japan Patent Office for its patent of Systems and Methods for Object and Obstacle Detection and Classification in Collision Avoidance of Railway Applications. The patent discusses the company’s artificial intelligence-based technology designed for railways, Rail Vision officials said in a press release. The system’s capabilities include detection and identification of objects and obstacles near, between and on the railway, as well as thermal image processing and electro-optic sensors for surveying and monitoring.
