Rail supplier news from Wabtec, Stella-Jones, Siemens and Quintiq (Oct. 9)

Wabtec Corp.'s MotivePower subsidiary has obtained a $63 million contract from Metrolinx to build 10 low-emission locomotives featuring engines that meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 emission standards. To be designed and manufactured at MotivePower's plant in Boise, Idaho, the locomotives also will include the builder's Central Diagnostic System. Other Wabtec subsidiaries will supply the control systems, event recorders, brake shoes, aftercoolers and radiators.

Stella-Jones Inc. has agreed to acquire Arizona Pacific Wood Preserving Inc., Nevada Wood Preserving Inc. and Pacific Wood Preserving of Oregon Inc. and their wood concentration yard in Texas for $33 million plus the sellers' net working capital at closing, which is expected to occur Nov. 3. The businesses manufacture treated wood utility poles, railroad ties and other lumber products. Stella-Jones plans to finance the acquisition through a combination of existing credit and a vendor note of $7 million, according to a company press release.

Siemens' new metro trains have begun transporting passengers in Warsaw, Poland. The launch marked the start of Siemens new generation of Inspiro metro trains. Two trains are operating in Warsaw, with 15 more to be in operation by year's end, according to the company.

Quintiq will provide its optimization platform to DB Schenker Rail AG to integrate its rail network across Europe. Quintiq will work with information technology consultants Ab Ovo and DB Schenker's in-house IT department to implement the platform.
