Wabtec Corp. has obtained a $248 million order from Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS) for a number of Evolution Series ES43ACmi locomotives. WCS will use the trains to support rail operations at a high-grade iron ore mining project, located in eastern Guinea. The ES43ACmi is a dual-cab locomotive with a 4,500HP Evolution Series engine. It is fuel efficient and has proven performance in high-temperature environments such as eastern Guinea, Wabtec officials said in a press release. The locomotives will operate on the TransGuineen Railway, which is under construction. When completed, it will connect the Simandou iron ore mine and the Port of Morebaya. This is Wabtec’s second order supporting the mining project, and deliveries of the trains will begin this year.
STV has been selected by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) to lead the design for the south package of the Long Bridge project. The $2.3 billion project will add a two-track railroad bridge parallel to the existing Long Bridge, doubling capacity over the Potomac River between Virginia and Washington, D.C., where the existing Long Bridge operates at 98% capacity at peak times, STV officials said in a press release. The south construction package includes the rail bridge and bicycle-pedestrian bridges over the river. As lead designer, STV will oversee civil, structural, environment and geotechnical engineering; signals, utilities and landscape design. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025. The dollar value of the STV contract was not disclosed in the press release.
