Bombardier Transportation's European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) technology is operating on the latest very high-speed rail line to open in China, which connects Beijing and Guangzhou. Equipped with Bombardier's INTERFLO 450 ERTMS Level 2 technology, the final section of the more than 1,400-mile-long, north-south double-track link between Beijing and Zhengzhou launched operations on Dec. 26, according to a Bombardier press release.

FreightCar America Inc.'s board has elected William Gehl non-executive chairman. Gehl joined the board in May 2007. He succeeds Thomas Fitzpatrick, who has served in the role since March 2007 and will continue as a director. Until he retired in 2009, Gehl served as chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gehl Co. since 1995.

Axion Power™ International Inc. announced it completed shipments of its PbC® batteries to Norfolk Southern Corp. for use in the first all-electric locomotive, the NS-999. The final shipment means that $475,000 in revenue attributable to the eventual re-commissioning of the NS-999 will be recognized in Axion's fourth-quarter 2012 results, according to an Axion press release.

U.S.-based Teknoware Inc., a subsidiary of Teknoware Oy in Lahti, Finland, has acquired the assets and name of Trans-Lite Inc., which supplies lighting systems for the rail industry. The sellers were members of the founding family, William Jr., Andrew and Ann Maley. William Jr. and Andrew Maley have held management positions at Trans-Lite and now will transfer to Teknoware. The firm's 70 workers also will become Teknoware employees. The acquisition will support Teknoware's global expansion strategy, particularly in the North American market, Teknoware Managing Director Kai Kauto said in a prepared statement.

Parsons Brinckerhoff named Charles Maass a senior supervising construction engineer in the New York City office. He will serve as the firm's resident engineer for the Second Avenue Subway project. Maass' prior experience includes a 20-year career with the New York State Department of Transportation. Parsons Brinckerhoff also named Terry Marcellus a senior commercial specialist in the Sacramento, Calif., office, where he will manage the delivery of design-build construction packages for the initial segment of California's high-speed rail project. Marcellus has more than 18 years of experience in managing major transit projects.
