• Italian rail operator Trenitalia has unveiled a full-scale mock-up of the Frecciarossa 1000 high-speed train being built by Bombardier Transportation and its consortium partner, AnsaldoBreda. The Frecciarossa 1000 is the newest member of Bombardier's ZEFIRO high-speed trains, known as the V300ZEFIRO model. In September 2010, Bombardier and AnsaldoBreda won an order to deliver 50 trains. The first units are in production and track tests will take place at year’s end.

• Winchester Electronics Corp. has acquired Clements National Co. Terms were not disclosed. The acquisition will enhance Winchester’s product offerings, enabling expansion into new markets, Winchester officials said in a prepared statement. Founded in 1971, Clements provides power and signal connectors to the rail/mass transit and marine, oil and gas markets. Its connectors and cable assemblies are sold under the Cadillac trademark to railroad equipment manufacturers and operators, as well as oil and gas distributors, in the United States and Canada.

• A LSIS-led consortium including Ansaldo STS has been selected by KRNA (Korea Rail Network Authority) as the supplier of a train control system for the Honam high-speed line between Osong and Gwangju Songjeong. The line is scheduled for completion by December 2014. Ansaldo’s portion of the contract is valued at $49 million. Ansaldo’s scope of the contract covers the design of ATC and IXL systems, validation, tests and commissioning, training and maintenance tools. Ansaldo will provide its SEI (Integrated Train Control System) with TVM, NS1 relays and hot-box detectors, according to a press release.

• Axion International reported second-quarter revenue of $1.8 million, a 38 percent increase compared with the same period a year ago. The crosstie supplier’s gross margin at $40,100 “continues to prove challenging,” according to a company press release. Axion reported a net loss of $1.7 million in the quarter compared with $2.7 million in second-quarter 2011, as restated. Also during the quarter, the company secured $5 million in financing to provide the liquidity necessary to improve production processes and meet strategic objectives for the year, Axion officials said. “We are confident that as we continue to make improvements in our sourcing of raw materials and manufacturing processes and expand our sales to lessen the impact of favorable pricing … we will begin to realize our plan to improve our gross margins in the latter half of 2012,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Steve Silverman.

• Strato Inc. Chief Executive Officer Michael Foxx has received the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year® Award in the industrial products category in New Jersey. The award recognizes “outstanding entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities,” according to a company press release. As a New Jersey award winner, Foxx is eligible for consideration for the National Entrepreneur of the Year 2012 Award, which will be announced Nov. 17.

• David Dye has been named vice president and senior program director for HNTB’s program delivery practice, for which he will manage program delivery projects across infrastructure markets. Dye has more than 30 years of experience in administration and management of transportation, transit and design-build projects. Most recently he served as deputy secretary and chief operating officer of the Washington State Department of Transportation.
