Rail supplier updates from GE, Bombardier/EMD, Thales, AECOM, Railserve and RailWorks (Sept. 19)

GE Transportation and Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) have signed a "landmark" agreement to extend their partnership in Kazakhstan to produce passenger locomotives at an assembly plant in Astana, according to a GE press release. GE will deliver 110 of its Evolution™ Series locomotive kits, which will be assembled by Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty, a joint-stock company of Kazakhstan and a subsidiary of KTZ. The first order of locomotives will be delivered in the first half of 2014. Also, GE announced it will collaborate with Hong Kong rail operator MTR Corp. to apply GE's Tempo CBTC and Interlocking solutions for MTR's metro infrastructure. The collaboration is a first between GE and MTR, GE officials said.

Bombardier Transportation and Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. will join forces to assemble diesel-electric locomotives in India, the companies announced today. Bombardier will manufacture components, including underframes and trucks, and assemble the EMD locomotives at its Savli plant in India. EMD will provide all engineering and quality control, and will be responsible for product performance.

Thales has obtained a $52 million contract from the Slovenian Transport Ministry to provide a complete European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 on the Slovenian part of Corridor D. Due for completion in 2015 and performed in partnership with GH Holding, the project concerns a rail line stretching from the Hungarian border to Italy, according to a Thales press release.

AECOM Technology Corp. has named Thomas Peck senior vice president and chief information officer. He will lead the company's worldwide information technology organization, and will be responsible for elevating IT to make it a competitive advantage for the company. Prior to joining AECOM, Peck served as CIO at Levi Strauss & Co. His 20-year career also includes stints as CIO at MGM Mirage and an "accomplished career" at General Electric, culminating in the CIO role at NBC Universal’s entertainment business unit, according to an AECOM press release.

Railserve has appointed Timothy Morrow plant manager of LEAF Production, Railserve Parts Division. Previously, he was senior product development manager for Guardian Building Products. Morrow has experience in Lean Six Sigma manufacturing practices and self-directed work-team deployment, which he developed during his 38-year career at Guardian, Railserve officials said in a prepared statement.

RailWorks Corp. appointed Daniel "Danny" Brown as corporate equipment manager. He has more than 15 years of railroad management and business development experience. In his new role, he will manage purchasing and maintenance for the company’s vehicle and equipment fleet. Brown previously held the dual posts of vice president of sales for FCM Rail Ltd. and national sales manager for Progress Rail Leasing. He has held equipment-related positions with Progress Rail Services/FCM Rail since 2000.
