• A Kiewit/Kobayashi joint venture has awarded a $60 million contract to L.B. Foster Co. to supply rail, concrete ties, direct-fixation fasteners, third rail with accessories and special trackwork for the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation’s 20-mile elevated passenger-rail line that’s scheduled to open in 2019. The contract is L.B. Foster’s largest-ever order, according to the company.

• In second-quarter 2012, Wabtec Corp. reported record sales of $610 million, a 27 percent jump compared with second-quarter 2011, mainly due to strong growth in the freight group, according to the company. Earnings per diluted share totaled a record $1.33 versus 75 cents in the year-ago period. Based on the financial results, Wabtec officials have raised their full-year 2012 guidance for earnings per diluted share from $4.80, with revenue growth of about 15 percent, to $5.10 or $5.15, with revenue now expected to be up about 20 percent compared with 2011.

• Bombardier Transportation and consortium partner Vossloh Kiepe will supply 20 additional BOMBARDIER FLEXITY Swift light-rail vehicles to Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) Metrolink system. The agency exercised an option on a 2007 contract for eight light-rail vehicles. TfGM since has purchased 66 additional units; the latest option brings the order total to 94 vehicles. The 20-car option is valued at $51 million; Bombardier’s share is $38 million.

• Engineering firm Alfred Benesch & Co. has merged with LONCO Inc., which provides civil, structural and transportation engineering services in Naperville, Ill., and Denver. LONCO’s practice will be integrated into Benesch’s existing services in both states.

• Stella-Jones Inc. announced it will not proceed with a planned acquisition of certain pole-treating assets of Brisco Wood Preservers Inc. Stella-Jones did not provide any additional information or comments about why it was no longer pursuing the deal. The planned acquisition was announced in May.

• Unitrac Railroad Materials Inc. received a $3.4 million contract from the Kansas Department of Transportation to furnish rail and other track components for a South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad project. The project is being funded through the federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, grant program.

• Michael Baker Jr. Inc. recently obtained a $1.57 million contract from the District of Columbia Department of Transportation to assess the Long Bridge over the Potomac River and develop options to rehabilitate or replace the structure. The bridge accommodates trains operated by CSX Transportation, which owns the structure, as well as Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express. Under the first phase of the study, Baker will review the condition of the bridge and identify potential short-term repairs. Then, the firm will analyze the structure’s capacity and develop options to add capacity and identify a preferred approach.

• Nordco Rail Services & Inspection Technologies Inc. has appointed John O’Neil general manager of compressed gas cylinder systems and services. He has more than 30 years of experience in nondestructive testing, quality assurance controls and program administration.
