Thales, as the leader of a consortium, has obtained a contract from Bulgarian railway infrastructure company NRIC to provide electronic signaling and telecommunication technology for the Sofia-Plovdiv rail line. Kapsch CarrierCom will provide the project's GSM-R technology. The entire contract is worth about $46.8 million. Thales and Kapsch will cooperate in implementing the entire solution on the 83-mile Sofia-Plovdiv line, which is part of the International Rail Corridor IV running from Dresden, Germany, to Istanbul, crossing Bulgaria, according to a Thales press release.

L.B. Foster Co. reported its fourth-quarter net income rose to $6.7 million, or 65 cents per diluted share, from $6.1 million, or 60 cents per diluted share, in fourth-quarter 2011. Net sales increased to $140.7 million during the period, up from $133.7 million. Rail segment sales climbed 23.2 percent in the quarter, driven by strong sales in the rail distribution and transit products businesses, L.B. Foster officials said in a press release. For the full year, the company reported net income of $16.2 million, or $1.58 per diluted share, down from $22.9 million, or $2.22 per diluted share, in 2011. Net sales increased from $575.3 million in 2011 to $588.5 million.

Peab has obtained a contract to build a rail line between Barkaby and Kallhall in the Malarbanan project. The line is the first stage of an expansion between Tomteboda and Kallhall in northwestern Stockholm. The work will be done in close collaboration with the client, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the project engineer, Vectura, according to a Peab press release. The order is valued at $184 million.

Brian King, who recently was named a senior associate at Gannett Fleming, will be based at the firm's corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa. An incorrect city was reported in the Feb. 4 edition of "Rail Supplier Updates" on ProgressiveRailroading.com. King is manager of maintenance facilities in the firm's transit and rail section. He is responsible for planning, design and construction-phase services of bus and rail maintenance facility projects in the United States and Canada.
