Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight
Yesterday, Xplore Technologies Corp. announced it received an order for 500 wireless personal computer (PC) systems from a national railway company, which the supplier didn't identify.
The railroad plans to use Xplore's iX104 Renegade Tablet PC as part of a conductor work-order reporting system. The system is designed to enable mobile field technicians to track rail yard activities and trace train locations.
The Renegade is more suitable to an industrial, field environment because the system is resistant to extreme temperatures, intense vibrations and water, Xplore officials believe.
"The Renegade … reduces the total cost of ownership per unit by eliminating more fragile commercial grade computers that are more likely to be damaged while on the job," said Xplore Vice President of Sales Mark Holleran in a prepared statement.
