U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, earlier this week toured Geismar-Modern Track Machinery Inc.'s new plant in Beaufort, South Carolina. Sanford also met with company officials and other industry representatives for a discussion of public policy issues. The tour and meeting was organized by the National Construction & Maintenance Association (NRC) and the Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA). Geismar-MTM is a member of both organizations.Geismar-MTM, which has served the North American rail industry for more than 40 years, recently opened the 47,000-square foot Beaufort plant. The company provides a range of tools and equipment, from hand-held machinery to heavy equipment for trackwork. Geismar-MTM's new American manufacturing division will allow the company to compete for federal transit projects, which require U.S.-sourced materials, according to press releases issued by the NRC and REMSA.Geismar-MTM President and REMSA Board Vice President Al Reynolds led the tour of the manufacturing facility. The group viewed a state-of-the-art dual powered diesel-battery vehicle in development for Amtrak."We are greatly looking forward to competing for U.S. passenger rail and transit business, and manufacturing the tools needed to maintain safe rail operations here in South Carolina," said Reynolds.
