Union Switch & Signal lands large UP software contract

Today, Union Switch & Signal Inc. (US&S) announced it obtained a contract from Union Pacific Railroad to install Optimizing Traffic Planner™ (OTP) and Next Generation Computer-Aided Dispatch System software throughout the Class I’s system — one of the largest software contracts in railroad history, according to US&S.

OTP is designed to optimize trains movements in real time to meet a railroad's logistics and operating needs. The system generates new and revised train plans based on updated field information, and reacts to unexpected events, such as out-of-service track or trains running slower than expected.

“With the OTP system in place, Union Pacific will be in a position to greatly increase operational efficiency while reducing costs,” said US&S President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Burk in a prepared statement.

US&S markets signaling, automation and control equipment and systems to the worldwide railroad and mass transit industries.
