Updates from Alstom, Axion, Rail Safety, Gannett Fleming and Control Chief

• Vossloh AG and Alstom have obtained a $177 million contract to supply 50 tramways to Ustra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG in Hanover, Germany. Alstom’s $29.5 million share of the contract calls for providing 150 trucks, according to Alstom. The contract includes an option to provide an additional 96 tramways, calling for 288 trucks. The trucks will be manufactured at Alstom’s Salzgitter plant.

• Axion International has obtained a $250,000 contract to supply recycled structural composite ties for Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Trinity Railway Express (TRE) commuter-rail line. Axion will fulfill the contract through Herzog Transit Services, which operates the TRE. The ties will be installed along the two-mile-long Beltline Overpass.

• Rail Safety Consulting L.L.C. (RSC) has obtained a contract from Kansas City Southern Railway Co. to provide services in support of the railroad’s positive train control (PTC) systems. RSC’s services will include technical support for the completion and submission of the Federal Railroad Administration-required PTC documentation and supporting safety evidence for system certification, according to RSC. The company is providing similar services for other freight and commuter railroad clients.

• Gannett Fleming’s “Sounds of Transit” computer-based interactive sound information system received the National Recognition Award for engineering excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies. Gannett Fleming created the system for the Florida Department of Transportation, which contracted with the firm to evaluate different transit and transportation solutions, including multiple transit technologies. The system features a library of recorded and calibrated sound levels collected from 32 transit and rail sites with similar corridor characteristics.

• Control Chief Corp. is sponsoring an “Oldest System in Operation” contest to help mark the company’s 40th year in business. The company is asking customers to submit the serial number of their oldest working system. The contest ends May 31, and the winner will be announced at the company’s open house and dedication ceremony on June 24.
