• Alstom has obtained a $135 million contract to supply 20 Coradia Nordic regional trains to Skanetrafiken in Sweden, according to an Alstom press release. The new trains will serve rail lines in the Skane region. The Coradia Nordic train offers a maximum of 235 seats and can reach a speed up to about 99 mph. Delivery of the rail cars is scheduled for 2013 and 2014.

• Bombardier Transportation has obtained a $154 million contract from the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) to provide 54 multilevel commuter-rail cars for the Maryland Area Regional Commuter. MTA is the third North American transit system to order these cars; the others are New Jersey Transit and Agence Metropolitaine de Transport of Montreal, according to a Bombardier press release.

• Duos Technologies Inc. has obtained a contract worth about $680,000 to install its intelligent video security solutions at a major rail section in Indianapolis, according to a company press release. The project is part of a larger security effort as the city prepares to host the Super Bowl in February 2012. Duo will supply technology that will enable local law enforcement and rail security personnel to monitor activity in the city from a remote command center.   

• RMI has hired Ryan Smith as an account executive in the firm’s ShipperConnect group to focus on rail operations software for shippers and third-party logistics providers. Smith has more than 15 years of sales experience in transportation and third-party logistics with specialization in strategic account management and supply-chain solutions, according to an RMI press release. The firm also announced it released its ShipperConnect transload management software for rail terminal operators.

• Graham-White appointed Jack Kuhns vice president of sales for North America, and named Mitch Gillispie director of aftermarket sales for North America. Kuhns will oversee the OEM, aftermarket, short-line and Class I customers as well as maintain account responsibility for CSX Transportation. Gillispie’s new duties include account responsibility for Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway, as well as manage aftermarket sales to Class I and short-line railroads. Meanwhile, Stewart Bruce, vice president of sales and marketing, will continue to lead all international and rail transit business. He also now directs the company’s heavy vehicle/industrial sales divisions.
