• Alstom has obtained an $18.8 million contract from France’s Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile region to supply eight Citadis Compact tramsets. Delivery is slated for summer 2013. The French region is the first municipality to acquire Alstom’s new Citadis Compact tramway, according to a press release.

• Kelso Technologies (USA) Inc. has received an order for its AAR-approved 75PSI constant force spring pressure-relief valve and new 165PSI constant force spring pressure-relief valve from a large undisclosed petroleum company. The order, which is associated with a retrofit program for existing tank cars, is worth $275,000. The valves are scheduled for delivered during the next 15 months.

• Railinc recently upgraded the Early Warning/Maintenance Advisory system for the rail industry. The system enables railroads to access data that’s essential for the safe movement of freight, according to a press release. With the recent upgrade, railroads now can subscribe to email notifications about specific units of equipment, conduct advanced inquiries, view current and historical data more easily, and report repairs and inspections, Railinc officials said.

• ProTran1 has obtained $250,000 worth of contracts for a transit track worker safety project, which will feature RFID and real-time communications. The project is expected to be fully operational by December.

• ZF Group recently established a business unit to serve the North American rail market and configured part of its manufacturing facility in Gainesville, Ga., to produce OEM rail gear boxes. “The framework we’ve established in Gainesville … will enable quicker U.S. production for our rail customers,” said John Duncan, president of off-road driveline and chassis technology, in a prepared statement.

• The Whitmore Group has named David Schaer director of marketing. He will direct marketing communications initiatives for Whitmore’s four operating divisions. Schaer has more than 25 years of corporate and ad agency marketing experience.

• The National Railroad Construction & Maintenance Association (NRC) has appointed Tabitha Layman as grassroots coordinator. She will helm a new NRC initiative aimed at arranging visits by federal and state legislators and politicians to association member facilities and work sites. Layman has experience in political broadcasting, campaign operations, federal legislative and policy issues, and association government affairs management, and has worked on campaigns in New Mexico and New Jersey.
