Updates from Alstom, Railserve, RailComm, Timken and HDR

• Alstom recently obtained a $57.6 million, 11-year contract from Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México S.A. de C.V. (Ferrovalle) to maintain 410 miles of track in Mexico. Alstom will be responsible for the corrective and preventive maintenance of all track miles operated by Ferrovalle, Alstom officials said in a prepared statement. The maintenance team will comprise more than 100 employees; 90 will be transferred from Ferrovalle. Ferrovalle is jointly owned by Kansas City Southern de México S.A. de C.V., Ferrocarril Méxicano S.A. de C.V., Ferrosur and the Mexican federal government.

• Railserve has teamed with Engine, Fuel and Emissions Engineering Inc. (EF&EE) to identify and apply for federal and state grants available to buyers of the Railserve LEAF® Gen-Set locomotive. Upon the request of qualified LEAF buyers, EF&EE will identify grant sources for eligible purchasers and either guide them through the application process or complete applications on their behalf, Railserve officials said in a prepared statement.

• For the fifth consecutive year, RailComm has been ranked on Inc. magazine’s list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies in the United States. The company is ranked No. 1,061 overall and No. 91 among the top software development companies. The magazine honored RailComm because of its 285 percent revenue growth from 2007 to 2010, according to a press release.

• The University of Akron (UA) and The Timken Co. have reached an open-innovation agreement to accelerate technology development. The organizations plan to combine their expertise in materials and surface engineering at laboratories in the UA College of Engineering, Timken officials said in a prepared statement. The agreement calls for Timken to contribute resources to establish the Timken Engineered Surfaces Laboratory. Effective Sept. 1, Timken’s Gary Doll, chief technologist in tribology and next-generation materials, will lead the lab as the Timken-endowed chair in engineered surfaces.

• Jacob Craig recently joined HDR as a senior rail engineer/project manager in Cincinnati, where he will manage rail construction oversight projects for Class Is, regionals and short lines in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee. Prior to joining HDR, Craig was a project manager with Anderson and Associates Inc. His 14 years of industry experience include a stint as a staff liaison to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transit as manager of programs.
