• Today, Unit Rail and Advanced Track Products, a combined company and division of Amsted Rail, launched a new brand and officially changed its name to Amsted Rail Product Solutions (Amsted RPS). The launch of the brand is part of the company’s business growth strategy and will strengthen its position in domestic and international markets, Amsted officials said in a prepared statement. The new brand identity will formally launch at Railway Interchange 2011 to be held in Minneapolis Sept. 18-21.
• AECOM Technology Corp. has obtained a $35.5 million contract from the city of Edmonton, Alberta, for a light-rail transit (LRT) expansion project. The company will provide preliminary engineering design services for the Southeast LRT line from downtown Edmonton to Mill Woods, and the West LRT line from Lewis Estates to downtown Edmonton. The new 29-station LRT system will include 17 miles of double track, with more than half a mile to be built in tunnels and one mile on an elevated structure. The preliminary design is slated for completion by September 2013.
• Transportation Certification Services Inc. (TCS) has named John Conklin III assistant vice president. He most recently was program administrator for locomotive engineer certification at the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). At TCS, he will be responsible for regulatory compliance, implementing new FRA regulations for clients, safety audits, and overseeing operations training and consulting.
• Tranergy Corp. will recognize its 25th anniversary by placing increasing emphasis on international expansion of its rail friction modification systems, company officials said in a prepared statement. Tranergy’s products are used on railroad mainlines, bridges and switches, as well as in classification yards and for cranes. “We have helped railroads throughout North America reduce maintenance-of-way costs, save energy and improve their profitability,” said Sudhir Kumar, Tranergy’s founder, chairman and president. “Our goal as we enter our next era is to expand these benefits to railroads in the rest of the world.”
• Parsons Brinckerhoff Halsall Inc., the Canadian operating company of Parsons Brinckerhoff, has created a transportation advisory board comprising Canadian business and government representatives to provide guidance on emerging trends and business opportunities. The board includes Ernie Eves, former premier of Ontario; David Collenette, former federal transport minister; Janet Ecker, former finance minister of Ontario; Remo Mancini, former revenue minister of Ontario; Bob Onyschuk, former chairman of the Canadian Urban Institute; and Mike Hardt, a former senior executive with Bombardier Transportation.
• Parsons Brinckerhoff has appointed Timothy White senior supervising engineer in Honolulu, and Abra Horne, senior supervising planner in Orlando. White will serve as manager of safety and security for the general engineering consultant on the Honolulu Rail Transit project, a 20-mile rail line connecting West Oahu and Honolulu. He has more than 31 years of experience as an environmental health and safety professional. Horne has 20 years of experience managing corridor and policy studies, and has conducted a variety of highway and transit studies throughout Florida.
• Tina Landwehr has been promoted to safety supervisor at Gulf Intermodal Services, where she will oversee driver instructors in Texas, Louisiana and Alabama. She is responsible for ensuring drivers are in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and company safety rules and regulations. She has served Gulf Intermodal since 1997.
