• Ansaldo STS Deutschland has obtained a $19.9 million contract from Deutsche Bahn AG to install ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 signaling systems on a rail line between Rostock and Berlin, Germany. The line connects Rostock, home of one of Germany’s largest ports, to the axis linking Berlin to Verona/Milan, Bologna, Naples, Messina and Palermo, which forms the Trans-European Transport Network. This is the first project under the ETCS Level 2 framework agreement between Ansaldo STS Deutschland and Deutsch Bahn AG in 2011, and the second major contract awarded to Ansaldo STS by Deutsche Bahn to build ETCS Level 2 systems in Germany, according to an Ansaldo press release.
• Harsco Corp. has obtained $13 million in railway track maintenance equipment orders from customers in Japan and North America, company officials announced in a press release. In Japan, Harsco will supply its 20-stone rail grinder configuration, a self-propelled track maintenance unit that will be used to maintain rail surfaces and rail-to-wheel contours on the high-volume Shinzai and Shinkansen lines operated by the East Japan Railway Co., JR East. Delivery is slated for the second half of 2012. The North American orders will support railway track maintenance requirements for a range of customers, and include ballast tampers and a new design tie anchor unit. Deliveries are anticipated for the end of 2011.
• Norfolk Southern Railway has purchased a GenSet locomotive kit from R.J. Corman Railpower. To be delivered in the fourth quarter, the 2,000-horsepower RP20BD will be used in the New York shared assets area, according to an R.J. Corman press release. The purchase was the result of a “public-private partnership” consisting of funds from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and NS, the release said. In addition to building the locomotive kit for operation on its own lines, NS’ Thoroughbred Mechanical Services has assembled five locomotives for various other R.J. Corman Railpower customers.
• Bombardier has opened the regional office of Bombardier’s Transportation Services division in Singapore. “Singapore is the perfect platform for us to expand and provide a full suite of products to help our customers in Asia,” said Nick King, who will lead the new office. Bombardier has had permanent head offices in Singapore since 2005.
• HJ Skelton has signed an exclusive agency agreement with DT Vyhybkarna a strojirna a.s. of Prostejov, Czech Republic, to represent, promote and sell production of railway and streetcar trackwork, and other track related materials for light rapid transit systems in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta, an HJ Skelton press release said.
• Gannett Fleming has named L. McEwan van der Mandele vice president. Based in Hamilton, N.Y., he serves as senior director of the firm’s Security Services Group. With 29 years of experience, he is a certified protection professional who provides consulting services on security issue and physical protection system development for military, transit, municipal and state government clients.
