• Electric-Motive Diesel Inc. (EMD) has supplied seven Class 77 locomotives to Akiem, the leasing subsidiary of SNCF Geodis. Akiem will lease the locomotives to cargo operating company Voies Ferrées Locale et Industrielles. In addition, Electro-Motive Services International (EMSI), EMD’s after-sales service organization, and Akiem signed a maintenance contract for the new locomotives. EMSI also will maintain other EMD locomotives obtained by Akiem through earlier mergers.

• TrackStar Alliance, of which AECOM Technology Corp. is affiliated, has obtained a $15 million contract to build transit-rail infrastructure in Queensland, Australia. The Darra-to-Springfield rail project entails six miles of dual track and two stations, including park-and-ride facilities. AECOM will provide civil and structural design of road and rail infrastructure, including alignments, drainage, pavements, utilities, bridges and stations.

• Yesterday, Eagle-SWS changed its name to SWS Environmental Services as part of a rebranding initiative. In late 2008, Southern Waste Services Inc. acquired Eagle Construction & Environmental Services L.P. to form Eagle-SWS, which combined 27 locations across 10 states. During the past two years, SWS Environmental Services has opened four new locations in Texas, Tennessee and Georgia.

• The Timken Co. has named James Skelly director of sales for the Americas. He will oversee the sales team in North and South America, which is focused on sales to original-equipment manufacturers in the off-highway, heavy truck, process industries, and health and positioning control markets. During his 26 years at Timken, Skelly has held various positions of increasing responsibility, including product manager, operations manager, regional manager for equipment sales and general manager of business development for the company’s distribution network.

• NRG Thermal L.L.C., a subsidiary of NRG Energy Inc., has obtained a contract from Valley Metro to install a solar-powered cooling system at the 3rd Street/Washington light-rail station. The cooling system is scheduled to launch the week of July 5, in time for Phoenix to host Major League Baseball’s 2011 All Star Game. The public-private partnership calls for NRG to cover the cost of building, operating and maintaining the new system, which is designed to leverage the existing energy-efficient downtown district cooling system and solar power to operate the air-conditioning/air-moving system, Valley Metro officials said in a press release.

• China Information Technology Inc., which supplies information and display technologies, has entered the implementation phase of its project with Shuohuang Railway Development Co. Ltd. in China. The project will mark the first time geographic information system (GIS) technology has been adopted by China’s rail industry, according to the company. In January, Shuohuang Railway commissioned the company to install GIS on its system, which is one of the main transportation channels for China’s National West-to-East Coal Transfer project.
