• Invensys Rail Corp. has named Bradley Hall vice president of products and innovation. He will lead the sales, marketing and product line management programs. He began his rail industry career in 1986, spending the next 21 years in a variety of commercial roles with both Conrail and CSX Transportation. Most recently, Hall was vice president of sales and marketing for American Commercial Lines.

• The GBS Group has obtained a software engineering contract with VIA Rail Canada Inc. to provide a real-time train status information (TSI) system. The system is designed to optimize GPS, train schedule and related data to provide more accurate forecasts of train departure and arrival times, on-route tracking, updated station arrival times and on-time performance reporting. GBS will provide a customized “smart” system that takes into account service route trends, and train position and speed, and is integrated with VIA Rail enterprise software systems, GBS officials said in a prepared statement.

• Stella-Jones Inc. reported second-quarter sales rose 7.8 percent to $180.3 million, in Canadian dollars, compared with $167.3 million for year-ago period. Excluding a currency conversion effect, sales increased 12 percent, primarily reflecting higher sales of railway ties and utility poles, as the company benefited from increased market demand on both maintenance and special projects, according to a Stella-Jones press release. Tie sales increased 8 percent to $95.5 million. Adjusting for a negative foreign exchange effect of $5 million, year-over-year comparable tie sales increased $12.1 million. Operating income for the quarter was $27.6 million, or 15.3 percent of sales, compared with $11.3 million, or 6.7 percent of sales, a year ago.

• Parsons Brinckerhoff named Arthur Lomenick sustainable development practice leader in the place-making group. He will oversee efforts to bring together capabilities from throughout the firm on large-scale, mixed-use urban development projects for both private developers and the public sector. Lomenick has 25 years of experience in mixed-use development and has been “instrumental in enhancing and building neighborhoods in cities throughout the United States, as well as transit-oriented development initiatives,” according to a company press release.

• Eric Bittenbender has joined DNJ Intermodal Services as operations manager in Indianapolis. He most recently was a dispatcher for Intermodal Cartage in Dallas. DNJ delivers containers and cargos throughout the Midwest, focusing on key shipping regions around Chicago and Indianapolis.

• Robert “Bob” Scesny, account manager for Invensys Rail Corp. and a 30-year veteran of the railroad supply industry, died unexpectedly on Aug. 7., the company announced. Scesny joined Invensys Rail, then Safetran Systems Corp., in 1997. His current assignment was account manager for the Kansas City Southern, and all short lines and transit companies in the western United States. Scesny also was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam. He was buried with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y. Scesny is survived by his wife, Kathie, and two daughters.
