• Siemens has obtained a $76 million contract to equip a rail line from Budapest-Kelenfold to Székesfehérvar, Hungary, with train protection systems. Siemens will supply two electronic Simis interlockings, Iltis remote control systems and 15 level crossings. The Trainguard 200 RBC European Train will be manufactured at Siemens plants in Budapest, Wallisellen, Switzerland and Braunchschweig.

• Alstom and Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment Co. Ltd. (SATEE) have obtained a contract from Nanjing Metro. Co. Ltd. (NMC) to supply the traction system for Nanjing Metro Line 10. The $33 million contract calls for Alstom and SATEE to supply traction systems for 21 six-car trainsets. They will be responsible for design, manufacturing, testing, commissioning and warranty services, as well as maintaining the systems and supplying spare parts for the traction systems of 126 metro cars.

• American Railcar Industries Inc. reported net earnings of $600,000 for the second quarter, or 3 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $5.9 million, or a loss of 28 cents per share, for the same period in 2010. Total revenue for the quarter was $111.9 million compared with $61.2 million a year ago. The company shipped 1,040 rail cars during the quarter compared with 370 cars in second-quarter 2010. The backlog increased to 5,290 cars on June 30 vs. 1,050 cars on Dec. 31, 2010. The backlog included 640 cars for lease. “We continue to see strong quote and order activity, along with improved pricing,” President and Chief Executive Officer James Cowan said in a prepared statement.

• Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE) has announced the following personnel moves: Jeffrey Smithline has been promoted to vice president of traffic engineering in New York City; Michael Monteleone has joined SSE as senior project manager; and Daniel Schack has been promoted to associate. Smithline most recently was director of traffic engineering. Monteleone has extensive transportation experience with lower Manhattan recovery projects, and Schack has been employed with SSE for eight years in the transportation engineering group of the New York City office.

• Hirschmann Automation and Control has promoted Tim Martin to inside sales representative for the Mobile Machine Control Solutions Division. Martin will be responsible for managing the system and part sales for the company’s house accounts. Martin has served Hirschmann since 2007 as a customer service representative.
