Updates from Vossloh, Stella-Jones and Thales

•    Vossloh Electrical Systems has obtained a contract with Wuppertaler Stadtwerke to provide 31 new suspension rail cars for the Wuppertal Schwebebah, a high-rail mounted suspension monorail in Germany, to be delivered by the end of 2015. The new cars will replace units that date back to the 1970s, according to a Vossloh press release.

•    Stella-Jones Inc. reported third-quarter 2011 net income rose 33.2 percent to $16.6 million, or $1.03 per diluted share, compared with $12.4 million, or 78 cents per diluted share, for the same period a year ago. Operating income during the quarter rose to $25.6 million, or 14.1 percent of sales, from $19.7 million, or 12.4 percent of sales during third-quarter 2010. Sales climbed to $181.8 million from $161.3 million a year ago. Railway tie sales during the quarter increased 9.7 percent to $92.3 million.

•    Thales has obtained an agreement to install a laboratory at Adif’s Rail Technology Center that will be used to promote national and international projects in the rail industry, according to a Thales press release. Research at the center will focus on signaling for three-rail track infrastructure; automatic train protection, level crossing supervision and control for the ERTMS L2 system; communications networks, smart grids, supervision and control linked to electric vehicles; train control, onboard broadband equipment; and video operation systems.
