• Whiting Equipment Canada Inc. has acquired Handling Speciality Manufacturing Ltd., which will continue to operate its manufacturing center in Grimsby, Ontario. Handling Speciality executives will work closely with Whiting’s management team and officials at Whiting’s manufacturing facility in Welland, Ontario, according to a prepared statement. With the acquisition, Whiting’s companies operate 11 manufacturing centers in Canada, the United States and China.

• HDR Inc. has obtained a contract from the Idaho Department of Transportation and Post Falls Highway District to design the Pleasant View Road and State Highway 53 grade separation in Kootenai County, Idaho. HDR will provide project management, roadway and structural design, environmental permitting, hydraulic analysis and constructability review services. The company also will coordinate its work with BNSF Railway Co. Pleasant View Road is a two-lane, north-south rural road that crosses a BNSF mainline near State Highway 53. The project calls for reconstructing Pleasant View and building an overpass to cross over three BNSF tracks and the state highway.

• Thales Canada has obtained a signaling contract worth $47 million for the North Light-Rail Transit (LRT) extension and upgrade in Edmonton, Alberta. Thales will supply its SelTrac® communications-based train control (CBTC) system. More than six miles of track and the entire Edmonton Transit System (ETS) fleet will be equipped with Thales’ CBTC system, which will be integrated with the existing ETS signaling system. The North LRT is scheduled to open in April 2014.

• Global Railway Industries Ltd. subsidiary CAD Railway has obtained a signed contract from Metrolinx to refurbish GO Transit passenger-rail cars. CAD completed a prequalification and formal tendering process including all contractual and financial requirements under the request for proposals, company officials said in a press release.

• RailTerm has been chosen to provide dispatching services to the Chemin de fer Roberval & Saguenay for its ARPA, Grande-Baie and Laterriere subdivisions. Chemin de fer Roberval & Saguenay mostly moves bauxite for aluminum production from Port Alfred, Quebec, to various aluminum smelters in the Lac-Saint-Jean region.
