Rail News: Railroading Supplier Spotlight
Wabtec Corp.’s WABCO Transit division recently was awarded a $60 million contract to supply brakes, couplers and current collectors for 660 R-160 MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subway cars, which are being built by ALSTOM Transport and Kawasaki Rail Car.
Wabtec has begun design work for the parts, which are expected to be delivered in 2004. Wabtec previously supplied brakes, couplers, current collectors and doors for NYCT’s R-142, R-142A and R-143 cars, which were delivered in 2002, and is providing parts for NYCT’s R-142S cars, which are expected to be complete in 2004.
If NYCT exercises an option for 1,040 additional cars, the contract would be worth $150 million, according to a prepared statement. Wabtec also is negotiating to supply door assemblies for the cars.
