Wabtec Corp. recently received a $19 million braking equipment order from Union Tank Car Co. To be delivered later this year by Wabtec subsidiaries WABCO Freight Car Products and Cardwell Westinghouse, the equipment include air brakes, draft gears and hand brakes, and Wabtec's UBX™ brake assembly.

Comprising components, pipes and brackets combined in a one-piece module, the UBX assembly is designed to be mounted directly onto a rail car's truck. The assembly features fewer parts, and weighs less and can be easier to install compared with body-mounted brake assemblies, said Wabtec Freight Car Group President Paul Golden in a prepared statement.

"We're … providing all of Union Tank's braking equipment requirements for 2004," he said.

Union Tank Car plans to install the UBX assembly on all future rail cars to streamline purchasing and assembly processes, said Dan Welch, supply chain director-manufacturing.
