The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday issued a request for proposals to lease the roof space of seven MTA properties for solar power development.
MTA will lease the real estate to companies that would use the roof space to install solar panels and generate electricity to sell back to the municipal grid, MTA officials said in a press release.
The seven MTA properties leasing roof space belong to New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad, and would have the capacity to generate an estimated 6.5 megawatts of electricity for thousands of New York City-area households, MTA officials said.
The locations were selected in partnership between the MTA Department of Environmental Sustainability and Compliance, MTA Real Estate and the individual operating agencies. Chosen rooftops and parking lots fit the necessary requirements of having new roofs and pavement, large quantities of unobstructed roof space and local energy demand.
The authority has identified more than 100 bus depots, train yards, repair shops and commuter lots across all MTA agencies — totaling more than 10 million square feet of industrial roof space — that would be suitable for solar development.
Fully realized, the properties present an opportunity to develop more than 100 megawatts of electricity, MTA officials said.
