The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has been awarded the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Gold Level for sustainability commitment.

The award recognizes MARTA’s ongoing commitment to sustainability initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment and the communities it serves, APTA officials said in a press release.

MARTA’s sustainability efforts fall into four areas: buildings, environment, community and climate. They are measured annually through vehicle revenue miles to account for increasing service areas through expansion.

Through efforts in all four areas, MARTA has reduced water use by 40%, greenhouse gas emissions by 27%, energy use by 14% and waste by 13% over a seven-year period, APTA officials said.
