VIA Rail Canada Inc. late last week released a report highlighting its sustainability efforts in 2017.
Last year, the railroad provided 4.39 million trips, marking a 10.5 percent increase over 2016’s total. As ridership increased, VIA Rail logged a 34 percent drop in greenhouse-gas emissions since 2015, railroad officials said in a press release.
In addition, since 2014, VIA Rail’s train incident ratio per million train-miles dropped 77 percent.
The sustainability report highlights the railroad's accomplishments and objectives based on the following: customer experience, socio-economic development, safety and security, the environment, general workplace practices and business conduct.
"More than ever, sustainable mobility lies at the very core of our existence and largely determines the long-term success of our company," said Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, VIA Rail’s president and chief executive officer. "While 2017 was a strong year for us in terms of revenues and ridership, we also examined ways to maximize our contribution to sustainable mobility across the country."
