The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) yesterday issued a request for proposals (RFP) to develop and operate solar panels on the rooftops of parking garages at Anacostia, Cheverly, Naylor Road and Southern Avenue stations.

WMATA is offering a 15-year solar ground lease to develop, install, operate and maintain solar photovoltaic (PV) power systems on garage rooftops and on surface parking lots.

Proposals are due Sept. 16.

The solar panels are estimated to generate up to 15 million kWH of energy, enough to power 1,500 homes, WMATA officials said in a press release.

The effort will advance WMATA's commitment to sustainability and generate new revenue to support transit and "keep fares affordable," said WMATA General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Paul Wiedefeld.

The solar panels are expected to be installed and supplying renewable energy by late 2020 or early 2021.
