Union Pacific Railroad plans to spend more than $27 million to upgrade a line between Henry, Neb., and 25 miles east of Lusk, Wyo.

When the project is complete at June’s end, crews will have removed and installed more than 76,000 concrete ties and 29 miles of rail, spread 98,000 tons of rock ballast and replaced four switches.

Crews will complete the line improvements using UP’s track renewal train, the TRT 909. The machine can install rail and concrete ties in one pass, and install up to 5,000 ties in a 12-hour day.

Meanwhile, UP also announced it recently received a Supplier Excellence Award from GE. The award recognizes excellence in compliance, quality, lean, direct material productivity, growth and customer centricity.

In addition, UP announced plans to mark the 140th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad from May 8-10. The Class I will display steam locomotive No. 844 in Ogden, Utah, where the golden spike was driven to cap off the transcontinental railroad in 1869.
