Fortune magazine recently named Union Pacific Railroad the “most admired” company among trucking, transportation and logistics firms for 2011. The magazine — which annually publishes a list of the world’s most admired companies according to several categories — expanded the transportation category this year to include railroads.

UP ranked No. 1 in seven of nine categories: people management; use of corporate assets; social responsibility; management quality; financial soundness; long-term investment; and products/services quality. The Class I ranked second in innovation and fourth in global competitiveness.

Fortune's research partner, Hay Group, surveyed 4,100 executives, directors and securities analysts to select admired companies from among 1,400 firms.

The recognition “demonstrates that our employees' commitment to quality, safety, service and productivity is valued by customers, communities and investors," said UP Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Young in a prepared statement.

Also listed in the trucking/transportation/logistics category: Norfolk Southern Corp., No. 3; J.B. Hunt Transport Services, No. 4; CSX Corp., No. 6; and Pacer International, No. 9.

Fortune’s
list of the top 50 most admired companies overall includes Apple at No. 1, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. — owner of BNSF Railway Co. — at No. 3, Wal-Mart Stores at No. 11, General Electric at No. 13, UPS at No. 30 and DuPont at No. 43.
