Union Pacific Railroad, the Colorado Wheat Administrative Committee (CWAC) and Colorado Association of Wheat Growers (CAWG) recently formed the CO/UP Wheat Work Group. Including representatives from CWAC, CAWG, UP’s grain team and the Colorado grain industry, as well as Colorado transportation consultants, the group will work collaboratively to reach a common understanding, address accountability and education, and discuss rates and service issues.

"Working together will allow us to learn about the strengths and concerns of everyone concerned with rail shipping,” said Dan Anderson, past president of CWAC — which represents the interests of Colorado wheat farmers — in a prepared statement. “This work group will lead to greater mutual understanding with and of our marketing partners.”

Eighty percent of Colorado’s winter wheat production typically moves by rail to Gulf Coast and Pacific Northwest ports for export to 67 countries.

”This is an excellent example of our effort to reach out to all who may use rail to transport their goods,” said Paul Hammes, UP’s vice president and general manager of agriculture.
