Union Pacific Railroad yesterday announced a 0.92 reportable injury rate through third-quarter 2015, which was a 12 percent improvement over the reportable rate during the same period in 2014.

A railroad's reportable injury rate is the total number of injuries reported to the Federal Railroad Administration per 200,000 employee hours, which is equivalent to 100 employees working a full year.

"While we continue to make significant improvement, we won't be satisfied until we reach our goal of zero incidents, ensuring every employee goes home safely at the end of each day," said Cameron Scott, executive vice president-operations, in a press release.

In 2012, the railroad introduced "Courage to Care," a personal pledge that employees make to practice safety. The pledge represents a "culture of safety and personal accountability," UP officials said.
