Union Pacific Railroad will spend $121.6 million this year to upgrade its infrastructure in California.

The Class I's capital expenditure plan for the state includes $104 million to maintain railroad track and $17.3 million to maintain bridges, according to a UP press release.

Key investments include:
• $5.1 million to replace 37,277 ties on the rail line between Galt and Stockton;
• $5.8 million to replace almost 12 miles of rail along the line in Fresno; and
• $5.2 million to replace 38,882 ties on the line between Delano and Bakersfield.

From 2011 to 2015, UP has invested more than $467 million to strengthen its transportation infrastructure in California, company officials said.

"We constantly evaluate our customers' needs to make targeted investments that enhance our efficiency and deliver the goods American businesses and families use daily," said Wes Lujan, vice president-public affairs, Western region.

UP plans to spend $3.75 billion across its network this year.
