Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad held a ceremony in downtown Omaha, Neb., to commemorate the opening of the Class I's new $260 million "Union Pacific Center" headquarters.

In 2002, UP began constructing the 19-story, 1.3 million-square-foot building, which will house 4,100 employees and enable UP managers to consolidate workers who previously were scattered throughout the former headquarters located across the street from the new facility.

Union Pacific Center features a 19-story atrium, training center, fitness center, salon, 600-seat dining area, credit union, 37-foot-wide by 16-foot-tall video screen, and a shop selling railroad apparel and merchandise.

"When we broke ground here, we envisioned a building that would offer bright, open and airy office space for our employees, [and] at the same time, we wanted Union Pacific Center to emerge as a beacon of downtown redevelopment," said UP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dick Davidson at the ceremony. "I think it's a home run on all counts."

Meanwhile, UP announced Erroll Davis Jr. recently was elected to the board. He serves as chairman and CEO of Alliant Energy Corp.
