The Illinois Commerce Commission recently approved safety improvement projects at two grade crossings in Cumberland County and one in Stark County.

The Cumberland County agreement requires CSX to install new automatic warning devices and improve approaches at the County Road 2100 East and County Road 2050 East crossings.

The estimated cost to design and install the warning signals is $1,278,362. ICC staff recommended that the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) be used to pay 95% of the costs, not to exceed $1,214,443. CSX will pay the remaining 5%, along with all future circuitry costs; the Crooked Creek Township will pay all future maintenance costs for the rehabilitated approaches.

The Stark County agreement requires Union Pacific Railroad to install new automatic warning devices and temporary STOP signs, and improve road approaches at the County Line Road crossing near Speer.

The estimated cost to design and install the warning signals is $399,028. ICC staff recommended that the GCPF be used to pay 95% of the costs, not to exceed $379,077. UP will pay the remaining 5%, along with all future circuitry costs, and the Valley Township will pay all future maintenance costs for the rehabilitated highway approaches.

All work must be completed within 18 months.
