In September, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 1,093 coal trains in the Southern Powder River Basin compared with 1,009 trains in September 2010.

The Class I averaged 36.4 train loadings per day in the basin and met 97.2 percent of National Coal Transportation Association (NCTA) demand for the month, UP officials said in a weekly coal loading performance report. By September’s end, operational issues caused by massive Missouri River floods finally began to ease, they said.

“River levels on the Missouri have fallen and train operations have returned to near-normal on the River Subdivision east of Kansas City, and on the Falls City Subdivision north of Kansas City,” the report states. “[However] the extended heat wave and drought in Texas is still causing track issues and slow orders in some corridors.”

In the Colorado/Utah region, UP last month loaded 251 coal trains compared with 234 trains in September 2010. The Class I met 94.7 percent of NCTA demand.
