In June, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 982 coal trains in the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) compared with 921 trains in June 2010. The Class I met 93.5 percent of National Coal Transportation Association (NCTA) demand.

For the month, the Class I logged 147 missed SPRB loading opportunities, 53 of which were attributable to mines, 47 to slow unloading at plants and 47 to operational issues, mostly resulting from Missouri River flooding that slowed the return of empty coal trains, UP officials said in a coal loading performance report. Missed loadings were partially offset by 79 extra loadings.

Flooding continues to impact operations in the region; Missouri River levels have stabilized but remain above flood stage in several areas, UP officials said.

“Our tracks on the Falls City Subdivision north of Kansas City were flooded in multiple locations beginning June 29,” they said. “The River Subdivision east of Kansas City was lost due to high water and flooding on July 1. Tracks in both areas will remain out of service until further notice.”

In the Colorado-Utah region last month, UP loaded 209 coal trains vs. 211 in June 2010. Overall loadings totaled 225 trains, which met 93 percent of NCTA demand, UP officials said in the report.
